TV Series Review

In the 1800s, only the brave and desperate were willing to venture away from the comforts of civilization and head to the unknown lands of the West.

Two of those brave souls are Liam and Abby Walker. They’ve just left the cruel, corrupt city of Boston for Independence, Texas. Their dream is to settle in this small frontier town and make a new name for themselves; Abby as a passionate teacher and Liam as the new sheriff.

Their dreams are so close they can nearly taste their fresh start. And then, suddenly, Abby is shot and left for dead and Liam is murdered in cold blood before he can ever introduce himself as the new sheriff.

Four days later Abby wakes up, recovering, thanks to the care of a Native American man named Calian. And although her body may be mostly whole again, her heart and mind are distraught.

Who would kill her husband? For what reason? Calian leads Abby to Independence to find out. But before she can tell the deputy what happened, the newly appointed sheriff walks out. And he looks a lot like the man who killed Liam–at least, from what Abby can remember.

Abby wouldn’t necessarily peg herself as the sort of woman bent on revenge. But grief and anguish can make you do strange things. Abby is about to find out just how deep the rivers of revenge and justice run as she pairs up with Calian and an outlaw named Hoyt to try and take down the town’s new, wicked ruler.

The Wild, Worn West

The CW has stepped into the 1800s with its latest series, Walker Independence. It’s a spinoff of Walker and filled with everything you might expect from something attempting to encapsulate the spirit of the Wild West.

Although the CW is only giving this a PG-rating, there’s plenty of content that pushes it above. Violence is a given, although not yet too graphic, drinking and gambling are common, profane language is scattered throughout, sexual content is far more than suggestive and the spirit of revenge lies around the corner of every saloon.

This doesn’t have the same harshness that other shows hold, especially those that are centered in the West, but there’s still plenty of content and misplaced accents to make this a certified CW classic.

Oct. 6, 2022–S1, Ep1 “Pilot”

Abby Walker and her husband, Liam, travel from Boston to Texas to begin a new life. But then Liam is murdered and Abby is left to pick up the pieces in a new town.

A man is shot multiple times and killed. An outlaw named Hoyt threatens to shoot anyone who crosses him, steps on a man’s hand and robs a bank. Abby asks Hoyt to help her murder the town’s new sheriff. Abby tells Hoyt that her relatives in Boston were cruel and corrupt people.

Abby and her husband kiss, make out and have sex (we see her husband shirtless as Abby unbuckles his pants, but then the camera pans away). Hoyt kisses a woman on her chest (we don’t see anything critical) and bare thighs and the two lie in bed, presumably after sex. A man accuses a preacher of sleeping with his wife. The preacher doesn’t deny it but quotes a Scripture on forgiveness. A woman named Kate tells Abby that prostitution isn’t illegal in Texas as prostitutes call out for passing men. Prostitutes dance provocatively in a saloon.

A Native American man, Calian, tells Abby that there is no death, just the passing of one life to another.

“D–n” and “h—” are used twice each. Men consume hard liquor. People lie, cheat, steal, gamble and threaten revenge.
