Award-winning band One Republic is heading to California in their latest single, “West Coast.” This alternative pop track holds a few melodic similarities to Adele’s “Skyfall,” except with a much faster beat and nowhere near as depressing.
Lead singer Ryan Tedder is ready to leave a cold climate (“I’ve been starin’ up at the grayest skies/…It’s like the weather makes the worst of my cloudy mind”) and head to a much warmer place (I could really use a dose of some paradise/…Yeah, they got sun in L.A. and some shinin’ stars”).
He says the warm weather impacts his mind and attitude (“Trade the shade for something warmer/…I need the sun for just a year”), but he could also use it to recover from a breakup (Sometimes you gotta run from a broken heart/…Like a prophet with a vision, I finally see the light”).
None.
Sometimes you just need a new environment and new faces to help you make it through a tough time. And this song is all about running from the blues that comes from a breakup, while also fleeing the winter blahs to find much warmer days–both figuratively and literally.
