AN AUDIO SNAPSHOT REVIEW
The Human Experience is the story of a pair of brothers, Jeff and Cliff, who set out from their halfway house home in Brooklyn to find meaning in life. A documentary camera follows them as they travel to diverse parts of the world to try to answer some basic “Who are we?” questions. They begin their journey on the New York City streets living among the homeless, then travel to work with orphaned and disabled children in Peru. They reach out to touch forsaken lepers in the forests of Ghana, Africa. And, finally, returning home, they reconnect with a father who abandoned them years before.
That may sound like a difficult and even grim journey. But what the young men discover changes them forever. Through one-on-one interviews and real-life encounters, the brothers are awakened to the beauty of the human person and the resilience of the human spirit.
This well-paced documentary does a wonderful job of addressing the sanctity of human life, the value of family, and what it means to find joy and purpose even in the midst of suffering. It provides a unique window on our world and it’s a powerful and sometimes emotional film. There are a few drawbacks, though, including a couple of profanities from some of those interviewed and some news clips that display flurries of violence.
