Episode 240: The Dark Side of the Influencer World. Plus, a Conversation with Director Andrew Erwin

LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 240

Most of us have probably heard horror stories of one kind or another about creepy guys lurking on social media. I’m talking about men who have an interest in underage girls, for the most part. We abstractly know there are some of those guys out there, of course. So we warn our kids and perhaps don’t think about it much after that. After all, is it really that bad? They’re out there, right?

Turns out, it just might be worse than we realize. And in this episode of The Plugged In Show, we’ll talk through a recent Wall Street Journal article that focused on one young female influencer and her mother, who found out that a seriously disturbing 92% of her teen daughters’ followers on Instagram were adult men. The story details how this mother and daughter dealt with that unsettling knowledge. Emily Tsiao and Jonathan McKee join me to talk about these concerns in the first segment of today’s show.

And in our second segment, we’ll hear from director and producer Andrew Erwin, who, along with his brother, Jon, has codirected movies such as American Underdog, I Still Believe and I Can Only Imagine. Andrew is also the host of the new Kingdom Story podcast called The Storytellers.

As always, we’d love to hear from you and engage your thoughts on the topics we cover each week. You can connect with us in several different ways. The comments section below is one method. Or shoot us an email at [email protected]. And, of course, Facebook and Instagram are options, too.

And if you go to our podcast homepage, thepluggedinshow.com, you’ll find a black ribbon on the right-hand side of the page where you can leave us a voicemail with your thoughts—we might even feature your audio message on a future show. We’re excited to report that we’ve begun hearing from some of you, and we look forward to adding more voices to the show as you leave us your thoughts there.

And if there’s anything else on your mind when it comes to movies and entertainment, pop culture and technology, we’d love to hear what you’re thinking about. We’ll look forward to connecting with you.

  1. It’s an important issue, but I’ve been in a lot of churches that either never publicly discuss the ethical problems of something like “seriously disturbing 92% of her teen daughters’ followers on Instagram were adult men,” to say nothing of the ones that outright condone or endorse this behavior because of some anti-Biblical “boys will be boys” mindset.

  2. In the interview with Andrew Erwin, Dennis Quaid was mentioned as having been in the Love Bug movies. I don’t think that is correct.
