Album Review

Pro-Social Content

Environmental consciousness and a kudo to Martin Luther King’s pacifism are central to “The Update.” “Sure Shot” takes issue with common rap terms degrading women (hypocritical, considering the group’s past efforts).

Objectionable Content

Although “Get It Together” puts down crack use, the group pleads for the legalization of marijuana on “B-Boys Makin’ with the Freak Freak.” Profanity appears throughout this stickered project with an emphasis on the f-word and the boys’ descriptions of their genitalia. Pro basketball star Bill Laimbeer is the target of significant verbal abuse on “Tough Guy.” “Bodhisattva Vow” promotes reincarnation and other Buddhist teachings. “Get It Together” is one long sexual come-on.

Summary Advisory

Lyrics such as, “I’m all about screwin'” and “I’m workin’ on rhymes . . . a little something stupid for the twisted and sick” provide insight into this band’s agenda. What’s really twisted and sick is that III debuted as the best-selling pop and number-2 R&B disc. Steer clear.
